Happy Holidays from the Dragonfly Transplant Fund!

12/20/2021

Picture
The Dragonfly Transplant Fund had an active and exciting year in 2021!

The year kicked off with a Valentine’s celebration brunch for the office staff at the UIHC Transplant
Center
. The celebration was to recognize the record breaking number of transplant recipients in 2020
at UIHC at 103 patients! In partnership with the Bread Garden Market, Dragonfly volunteers delivered
box brunches to all the office staff at their work stations. Reports indicate that 2021 may break the
record again.

In April, the Dragonfly put together a team to participate in the lowa Donor Network Green 5K and raised over $500 for Iowa Donor Network. In case you didn’t know, April is Donate Life Month.

In August, we held our 4th Annual Golf Outing at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside, Iowa. 2021 was the best year yet! With over 100 golfers and more than 50 volunteers, we raised over $28,000 donations for the Dragonfly cause. A highlight of the event was to have a number of both organ donors and recipients present at the event. Great job, Dragonfly Golf Committee!

In addition to the golf outing in August, we were able to host Deb's Celebration of Life. In recognizing
her courage and our vision, an endowed memorial fund was established. This fund will use its annual
earnings to provide educational scholarships for the nurses and staff at the UIHC Transplant Center. To
honor Deb's legacy, this fund is named the "Deb & Ed Brown Endowed Dragonfly Fund for Transplant
Support.” We owe a big thank you to the University of lowa Center for Advancement for their help and
guidance in making this happen. Deb and I wanted to say thank you to everyone at UIHC. It’s a fact that
a more knowledgeable staff will help everyone.

To close out the year, the Dragonfly Action Steering Committee committed 10% of the current Dragon-
fly fund to be used to enhance the transplant process for UIHC patients, families and caregivers. We asked the transplant nursing staff for their input and received valuable ideas as to how we can help
make this happen. We can’t wait to show everyone what awesome things are coming in 2022 with this
allocation!

I would be remiss if I didn't make note of the growth that the Dragonfly has experienced in the media
and marketing department throughout the whole year. Our Dragonfly website and Facebook have
proven to be a valuable method of communication and these digital marketing tools have helped us
grow awareness for the need for more people to sign up to be organ donors. To everyone who is a
donor, we have to say THANK YOU!

Picture
No, we have not accomplished our long-term goal - yet! A physical resource center and lounge for
transplant patients, caregivers, and families within the walls of UIHC to provide the support their needs
is still to come. Once our goal is achieved, the Dragonfly Resource Center will provide a physical space
to foster a community of support and survivorship.

When I reflect on the Dragonfly’s accomplishments in 2021, it’s obvious that it was a great year - and the best is yet to come! Where Dragonfly is today and where Dragonfly will be in the future is all because of you and your support. From our Dragonfly family to you, thank you, thank you, thank you - and happy holidays!

Sincerely,
Ed Brown

Tis the Season for Thanks...

11/20/2021

Over the years, our team of volunteers with the Dragonfly Transplant Fund have met some incredible human beings who have become our friends. Some are nurses, some are caregivers, some are patients, and some are just generally awesome people. We enjoy hearing their stories, sharing experiences, exchanging advice, and having a genuine connection with people who understand or want to learn more about the transplant process for transplant patients, caregivers, and their families.

Two of our friends and supporters, Kristin and Matt, wanted to share a story about their experience with the Dragonfly Transplant Fund gift card program...
Picture
"We are thankful to the Dragonfly Transplant Fund for their support to patients and caregivers! The Bread Garden gift card program will provide patients a way to enjoy a 'treat' while at the hospital. In our case, my husband’s desire for a 'fancy coffee' represented that he was improving and getting closer to his new normal. While our experience was before the advent of the gift card program, we can truly appreciate and relate to what this gift can provide…kindness, support, generosity, and comfort to patients and their caregivers during a very stressful time."  – Kristin and Matt

The Story Behind Blu

10/27/2021

Kim and Dave Burdakin, former residents of Muscatine, Iowa, sponsored the creation of Blu. Kim received a liver transplant in 2000 at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.

Blu was created in 2017 by Kim's brother, Jim Hetzler with Hetz Studio, as part of a public art installation and fundraising campaign called K-9s for Cops. The art campaign memorializes Chicago's fallen officers while supporting the families of officers killed or seriously injured in the line of duty.
Jim created Blu in Kim's honor as a tribute to organ and tissue donation. The Burdakin family donated Blu to the UIHC Transplant Center in gratitude for the specialized care that Kim received and to help continue their efforts to raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation.

We are very thankful that the Burdakin family is in support of The Dragonfly Transplant Fund and we love seeing Blu on display at the UIHC Transplant Center!

Our golf committee volunteers were very excited to present the University of Iowa Center for Advancement with a check for $32,665.00 from the proceeds of our 4th Annual Dragonfly Transplant Fund Golf Outing and Fundraiser this summer! Thank you to Alli Ingman from UICA for joining us for this special moment.

Since the inception of the Dragonfly Transplant Fund, we have raised over $83,000 with our golf outing fundraisers alone. We work hard as a volunteer group to ensure that we are spending our time, talents, and resources effectively to make the biggest impact on transplant patients and their caregivers.

Our vision for the Dragonfly Transplant Fund is to compliment the expert care transplant patients and their caregivers receive at the UIHC Transplant Center, specifically with enhanced educational materials and a dedicated lounge area to serve as a resource and to provide community and comfort to those in need. Below is some current information on our work with the University of Iowa Center for Advancement to continue this vision:
Picture
Create an engaged community of survivorship and re-birth from end-stage organ failure for pre-, peri and post-transplant patients and for their caregivers through philanthropy with:

  • A short-term vision to provide amenities for patients and families during their transplant experience
    • Meals, coffee cards and other resources (as examples) for those in financial need
    • Short term housing at local motels for those in financial need
    • Tools for successful transition to home for monitoring and recording progress and success

  • A longer-term vision in alignment with the UIHC master plan to create the Dragonfly Resource Center, a physical location for transplant recipients, caregivers and their families within the walls of UIHC to serve as a respite and a learning center
    • Long term fund growth earmarked for a physical space in the 10-year master plan for UIHC
    • Once complete, the Dragonfly Resource Center will provide a physical space to foster a community of support and survivorship for patients and their caregivers

  • Aspirational vision to provide short and medium-term permanent housing for patients and families receiving life-saving abdominal transplant surgery at UIHC

We receive support from individuals, businesses, and organizations from all across the United States. We are very fortunate to have the support of these two ladies from Alpha Graphics in North Liberty. Alpha Graphics has been our first choice for all things graphics, displays, and giveaways since the inception of the Dragonfly Transplant Fund. Cynthia (left) and Michele have been a critical part of our success, and they took time out of their personal lives to craft these beautiful works of art for us to display at the upcoming golf outing.

Thank you to Cynthia and Michele from Alpha Graphics for sharing your talents with us at the Dragonfly Transplant Fund! We appreciate you and your continued support of our mission.

Celebration of Life Open House in Memory of Deb Brown Scheduled for 8/21/21

6/21/2021

Picture
The Celebration of Life Open House in Memory of Deb Brown has been scheduled for Saturday, August 21st, 2021 from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the Cedar Memorial Family Center in Cedar Rapids.

In the midst of a pandemic, we didn't feel there was an appropriate time to truly celebrate her life. We will be gathering to share some of our favorite memories, our stories, to laugh, to cry, and remember Deb.

This event was previously scheduled for September 2020 and has been rescheduled in 2021. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our team of volunteers.

What is Deb Brown’s Legacy?

A legacy is a powerful approach to make a lasting difference. It is a way of creating the future you will not see but believe can be.

"Ultimately, how we live our life defines our legacy. For Deb, she was a great cook and baker who loved to entertain guests. She loved all animals. She was an avid reader (especially cookbooks and magazines). She spent so much time in her gardens. She had many good friends and she had a way of making the people she was with the center of attention.

As I write this today, April 12th, 2021, it is our 41st wedding anniversary. We spent many beautiful years together that were filled with all kinds of memories of family, traveling, and just simply enjoying our home. She left us physically last year on May 10th, Mother’s Day. She left so many good things behind for us. Now that I have had a year to stand back and reflect, one quality of Deb’s stands out to me. Her courage and tenacity was a quality that speaks best for her. Fifteen years ago, Deb took on breast cancer and, from there, she moved forward. Four years ago, she struggled through the process of a successful liver transplant, and she moved forward again. She was a fighter! Through all of the challenges that she faced, she showed courage through each challenge - time and time again.

Together, we hoped The Dragonfly Transplant Fund that we established would help transplant patients, families, and caregivers. It is our way of saying thank you to organ donors - past, present, and future - and also a way to thank the whole medical staff that guided us through the transplant process. This fund is our legacy, what we wanted to give back for all that we received, and how we both want to be remembered. Most importantly, it is a way of creating the future...Deb’s legacy, my legacy, and our legacy together."

- Ed Brown, Co-Founder of The Dragonfly Transplant Fund
