What is Deb Brown’s Legacy?

5/9/2021

A legacy is a powerful approach to make a lasting difference. It is a way of creating the future you will not see but believe can be.

"Ultimately, how we live our life defines our legacy. For Deb, she was a great cook and baker who loved to entertain guests. She loved all animals. She was an avid reader (especially cookbooks and magazines). She spent so much time in her gardens. She had many good friends and she had a way of making the people she was with the center of attention.

As I write this today, April 12th, 2021, it is our 41st wedding anniversary. We spent many beautiful years together that were filled with all kinds of memories of family, traveling, and just simply enjoying our home. She left us physically last year on May 10th, Mother’s Day. She left so many good things behind for us. Now that I have had a year to stand back and reflect, one quality of Deb’s stands out to me. Her courage and tenacity was a quality that speaks best for her. Fifteen years ago, Deb took on breast cancer and, from there, she moved forward. Four years ago, she struggled through the process of a successful liver transplant, and she moved forward again. She was a fighter! Through all of the challenges that she faced, she showed courage through each challenge - time and time again.

Together, we hoped The Dragonfly Transplant Fund that we established would help transplant patients, families, and caregivers. It is our way of saying thank you to organ donors - past, present, and future - and also a way to thank the whole medical staff that guided us through the transplant process. This fund is our legacy, what we wanted to give back for all that we received, and how we both want to be remembered. Most importantly, it is a way of creating the future...Deb’s legacy, my legacy, and our legacy together."

- Ed Brown, Co-Founder of The Dragonfly Transplant Fund

A Special Valentine's Day Surprise

2/15/2021

On Monday, February 15th, two of our volunteers with the Dragonfly Transplant Fund, Ed Brown and Jack Blong, visited the UIHC Transplant Center to share a special Valentine's Day brunch with the employees. As a thank you and a celebration of their hard work in 2020, Ed Brown donated a boxed brunch to 50 staff members on behalf of the Dragonfly Transplant Fund.

Of course, due to COVID-19 restrictions, this was not a typical "celebration" - but it was still a reason to celebrate.

To keep employees safe, our friends at the Bread Garden Market created a delicious assortment of brunch items to be delivered between 9am and 11am. The brunches were packaged individually by the friendly staff at Bread Garden Market. We would like to extend a special thank you to Laurie Havran, Administrative Coordinator at the UIHC Transplant Center, for wearing PPE and personally delivering brunch to each individual on-staff. Beth Schenkel, Administrative Manager at the UIHC Transplant Center, shared with us a few words:
The staff was thrilled with the assortment and the quality of the (food) items. After a week of battling February in Iowa where the temperature struggled to see positive territory, this was a luxurious treat.
As the staff at the UIHC Transplant Center continue to work hard every day, we would like to again extend our deepest gratitude and express our sincere appreciation for what they do to take care of all transplant patients and their families. Happy Valentine's Day from the Dragonfly Transplant Fund!

Dragonfly Transplant Fund Gift Card Program Update

1/13/2021

PictureSarah King, Floor Manager at Bread Garden Market, and Ed Brown, Co-founder of the Dragonfly Transplant Fund, exchange gift cards as the new gift card program is launched at the UIHC Transplant Center.
As our volunteers with the Dragonfly Transplant Fund start fundraising in 2021, we are excited to announce that the new gift card program is finally underway! Ed Brown, co-founder of the Dragonfly Transplant Fund, has generously donated 550 $5 gift cards to Bread Garden Market to transplant patients and their families as they stay at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics' Transplant Center.

"Deb and I set up the Dragonfly Transplant Fund to give back to others," he explains. "She and I celebrated in small ways after her transplant. We left her room, I pushed her in her wheelchair, and we went to the hospital coffee shop." Now, Ed wants other families to be able to enjoy a cup of coffee, too.

New Gift Card Program with UIHC and Dragonfly Transplant Fund

12/14/2020

In partnership with the UIHC Transplant Center, Ed Brown, co-founder of the the Dragonfly Transplant Fund, is excited to announce the Dragonfly Transplant Fund's new gift card program starting January 1st, 2021.
Picture
"One of the small celebrations after Deb's transplant and when she got out of ICU was to load her up in a wheelchair, go down to the coffee shop, and for her to order her own pastry and coffee," says Ed Brown. "I want other people to celebrate getting 'back to reality' - just like Deb."

The Dragonfly Transplant Fund will be providing two (2) $5 gift cards to transplant patients and their families during their stay at the UIHC Transplant Center. These gift cards are good at any of the four
Bread Garden Market Cafe locations at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The team of social workers at the UIHC Transplant Center will distribute the gift cards. A transplant is a big life changing thing - and the little things like a cup of coffee or a donut mean a lot.

Thank you to Bread Garden Market Cafe, UIHC, and our co-founder, Ed Brown, for making this gift card program possible for transplant patients and their families.
