"Ed is a long time agent and friend of United Life and I’ve had the pleasure of traveling with he and Deb on our incentive trips. Ed spoke of their journey at one of conferences and we made a commitment to support the Dragonfly Transplant Fund any way we could.
[Through the golf outing,] I’ve made some great friends over the years and I look forward to being a part of the team. Even though I’m not a golfer myself, it’s great to see everyone enjoying the day and showing their support for Ed, Deb and the organization.
I hope we continue to bring awareness to others about the benefits of organ donation. I hope the patients and caregivers find peace in knowing that they are not alone in this journey. And, I hope people realize that no act of kindness is ever too small to make a huge difference in this world."
Celebrating life and honoring the gift of organ, eye and tissue donation [April 1, 2024 – Richmond, VA] — Each April, Donate Life America (DLA) leads National Donate Life Month (NDLM), an observance focusing national attention on the need and importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. National Donate Life Month is about the importance of registering your decision to be a donor, honoring deceased and living donors, and celebrating the lives they saved. It is the generosity of donors and donor families that makes saving lives through transplantation possible. Donate Life is the national brand for the cause of donation, uniting the hundreds of donation and transplantation organizations; the more than 100,000 patients waiting for transplant; the life and legacy of the more than 1 million recipients in the U.S. and their families; the donor families who say yes in their time of grief, and the more than 170 million people who have registered their decision to be a donor and help others at the end of their life. Ways to participate in National Donate Life Month 2024: Give hope and help save lives by registering your decision to be an organ, eye and tissue donor at your local DMV, on RegisterMe.org or in your iPhone Health App.

A Special Celebration of Appreciation: 2024 Valentine's Day Brunch at the Organ Transplant Center2/14/2024
The Dragonfly Transplant Fund volunteers were thrilled to celebrate Valentine's Day with staff at the UIHC Organ Transplant Center today! Our Dragonfly co-founder, Ed Brown, alongside Julie Sherman with United Life and Troy Reineke with Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, delivered boxed brunches to transplant surgeons, doctors, pharmacists, coordinators, psychologists, social workers, financial counselors, administrative staff, and other staff members in the Organ Transplant Center at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This brunch was provided as a token of appreciation for the work that the Organ Transplant Center (OTC) staff does every single day to serve transplant patients, their families, and their caregivers through the transplant process. As best explained by UIHC, "the University of Iowa Organ Transplant Center is a multi-institutional, multidisciplinary center designed to put the patient at the center of the care team. Through state-wide services, experts from different disciplines are brought together in one place to serve our patients' needs and to help restore them to normal living."
Over 60 boxed brunches were made with love by our friends at Bread Garden Market to serve to staff in the OTC staff. Congratulations to OTC staff on another successful year of transplants, and thank you for the work you do! To keep the appreciation going, we encourage you to share your connection to organ transplant with us! We'd love to speak with you to learn more about your organ transplant experience, share your story with others, and pass along any words of appreciation you may have for the UIHC OTC staff. Submit your story today! In 2023, Iowa Donor Network reported a record number of over 1,000 tissue donors. Iowa Donor Network (IDN) recently published their 2023 Annual Impact Report. Since 2019, the number of organ donors has increased by 40% and the number of transplants by 21%. Additionally, IDN has seen a signficant increase in volunteer hours and fundraising totals. Another accomplishment to recognize is that Team Iowa, the representing team for the Transplant Games of America, has again brought medals to our home state! Team Iowa is comprised of athletes who are either living donors, transplant recipients, donor families, or donation supporters who participate in the Transplant Games of America.
"...I wanted to say congratulations for all you have accomplished. We are very proud to support you in your effort and we look forward to helping again at this year's Dragonfly Transplant Fund golf event... Your dedication to the cause and all that you have been able to accomplish is truly remarkable." - Tim Martin, Coralville Manager
King's Material, Inc. It’s my favorite time of year. It’s time when I sit and reflect. In 2023, we celebrated the sixth anniversary of the Dragonfly Transplant Fund, the fund that Deb and I started together. With our supporters, we have touched the lives of many organ transplant patients, their families, and their caregivers – enhancing the need for organ and tissue transplant and providing valuable support to the patients through the process.
In 2023, our Dragonfly volunteers were able to provide the following programs:
Our Dragonfly Transplant Fund volunteers thank and congratulate all of the supporters that make this long list of programming happen! No, we haven’t given up on the overall goal of having an onsite transplant resource center or lounge located inside UIHC. Yes, Dragonfly is providing the type of support Deb and I had envisioned for transplant patients, their families, and caregivers. We will continue to work hard to create a place for them to go - either online or in-person - to feel supported with transplant research, communications, and celebrations throughout the transplant process. Thank you for your support. Best personal regards, Ed Brown Co-Founder, Dragonfly Transplant Fund The Dragonfly Transplant Fund has been fortunate to collaborate with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics’ Stead Family Children’s Hospital on a new gift to serve pediatric transplant patients in Iowa. On Wednesday, November 15th, the Dragonfly Transplant Fund co-founder, Ed Brown, and Dragonfly Transplant Fund supporters, Gina Schmitt and Troy Reineke, visited Stead Family Children’s Hospital. They were hosted by Medical Director of Pediatric Kidney Transplant, Lyndsay Harshman, Pediatric Transplant Nurse Coordinator, Melissa Thompson, and Pediatric Medical Assistant, Abby Henderson. They were provided with a tour of the hospital and learned more about pediatric transplant operations. During the visit, our volunteers presented the Dragonfly Transplant Fund’s newest contribution to patients. Moving forward, all pediatric transplant patients will receive a scale to measure weight as they move through the transplant process at home. Lyndsay Harshman and her team shared the following: “We are so appreciative of the Dragonfly Transplant Fund’s donation to our pediatric kidney transplant program! We ask our pediatric patients to closely track fluid intake and weight in the post transplant period to ensure they are receiving adequate fluid and nutrition. Many of our families do not have a working scale at home. This generous gift from the Dragonfly Transplant Fund will further support our pediatric patients and families on their road to a healthy childhood.”
Thank you to the faculty and staff of Stead Family Children’s Hospital and the family of Carol Cutler for making this gift possible!

Through the University of Iowa Center for Advancement, the Dragonfly Transplant Fund is honored to have an endowed scholarship fund in memory of Dragonfly Transplant Co-Founder, Deb Brown. The funds in this scholarship are to be used to award scholarships to medical professionals working at the UIHC Transplant Center for specialized trainings, meetings, and other continuing education opportunities to improve the transplant process for patients, caregivers, and families.
Through the years between and after his educational achievements, he learned from a wide range of experiences that enabled him to be an effective and resourceful addition to any organization, and during each segment of his career, he aimed to improve operational processes focusing on simplification, teamwork coordination, and client relationships. Currently, Vladimir currently works at UIHC as a Quality and Operations Improvement Engineer in the Organ Transplant Center.
We were pleased to have Vladmir speak to the training he received through the scholarship fund this year at our annual golf outing in August! Thank you to Vladimir for your continued support of the transplant community at UIHC. |
